Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is a 2006 film directed by Gore Verbinski, written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. It is a follow-up to the first film, The Curse of the Black Pearl as the second part of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. The film stars Johnny Depp (Captain Jack Sparrow), Orlando Bloom (Will Turner) and Keira Knightley (Elizabeth Swann).
Dead Man's Chest premiered at the Disneyland Resort on June 24, 2006, and was released in the United States on July 7. The film broke several records at the time, including the opening-weekend record in the United States with $136 million and the fastest film to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office (63 days), and became the highest-grossing film of 2006, the third highest-grossing film of all time at the time of its release (behind Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King), and the highest-grossing film in the series. Dead Man's Chest was also the highest-grossing film released by Disney until it was surpassed by Toy Story 3 in 2010. It was the only one in the franchise to win an Academy Award, in the category of Best Visual Effects, including 3 more nominations. It was released on home video initially by a DVD release in 2006, and was re-released on Blu-ray format in 2007. Dead Man's Chest would be followed in 2007 by At World's End.
